A scraping noise will be heard when the rolling bearing fails and causes the armature to come into contact with the outer starter motor case. A ticking noise, when the solenoid connection plate or starter brushes have failed, not allowing electrical flow through the motor. A single click or repeated clicking indicates that the battery is low on charge. The starter may also fail when the starter control terminal is corroded or the wire loosens. When the starter gear doesn’t mesh properly with the engine flywheel, you may hear a loud metal grinding or screeching sound.
